From the Chair
Happy New Year! Y2K has come and gone and all is well in Houghton. Not much snow by Copper Country standards, but the ski hill is open, the Nordic trails are groomed, and the snowmobiles are here in force. Winter Carnival is just around the corner, and if you are in town for the festivities please feel free to stop by and say hello. I would love to hear how you are doing. (more)

Schulz Aims to Boost Computer Engineering, Research as New Chair of Department
On August 1, 1999 the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering welcomed Tim Schulz as Chair of the Department. Tim joined the Department in 1992, and since then his research has focussed on the use of statistical modeling and inference to restore or recover images, and he is perhaps best known for de-fuzzing pictures from the Hubble telescope.

"Tim has done an outstanding job in the classroom, and he understands the concepts of computer engineering," Engineering Dean Robert Warrington said. "He'll bring a new perspective and an energetic presence to the chair's position, both in undergraduate and graduate studies. Plus, he's very easy to work with, very collegial, and listens well, all important traits for a department chair." (more)

Department Receives ABET Accreditation
The Department learned in late September that its Electrical Engineering degree program was re-accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Evaluators visited the Department a year ago (in September of 1998) to review the report we had prepared during the 1997-98 academic year, and the subsequent accreditation continued our long tradition of ABET accreditation. As part of the first group of engineering schools to be accredited in 1936 when the accreditation board was known as the Engineers Council for Professional Development, the Department has maintained continuous accreditation ever since. Rockwell Gift Provides Support for Senior Design
With a $23,000 gift from Rockwell, the Department will soon establish an instructional laboratory for electrical communications and avionics design. By providing a rich selection of intellectual resources, computers, professional-grade software, and facilities for student design-teams to meet and construct hardware, this laboratory will integrate open-ended design projects with traditional course work in communication systems and signal-processing. In addition to providing support for other design projects whose financial needs are not covered by routine course overhead, this gift will also provide for the establishment of the Rockwell Award for Creativity in Communications and Avionics Design, which will be awarded to a student design group that exhibits exceptional creativity. Promotions with Tenure for Burl and Roggemann
The Department is pleased to announce that Jeffrey B. Burl has been promoted to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure, and that Michael C. Roggemann has been promoted to the rank of Professor with tenure. (more)

Ambardar Receives Second Distinguished Teaching Award
For only the second time in Michigan Tech history, a faculty member has won the Distinguished Teaching Award twice. Associate Professor Ashok Ambardar (Electrical Engineering) received the 1999 award in the associate professor/professor/lecturer category. Ambardar previously received the award in 1983 as an assistant professor. "This is an outstanding feat," said Professor Jon Soper, interim chair of the electrical engineering department. "We're really proud of Ashok and his talents." (more)

Brumm, Horvath, and Lewis Retire with 104 Years of Service
At the end of the 1998/99 academic year, three professors retired with a total of 104 years of service to the Department. Retiring from the University were Professor Paul Lewis with 38 years of service in the controls area, Professor Ralph Horvath with 37 years primarily in the computer area, and Professor Doug Brumm with 29 years in the areas of optics and electronics. All are missed by their colleagues. (more)

Orhan Soykan Joins the Department as an Adjunct Assistant Professor
Orhan Soykan has joined the Department as an Adjunct Assistant Professor. Professor Soykan's primary appointment is in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, where he is an Assistant Professor specializing in the areas of biomedical instrumentation, electrical stimulation of cardiac and skeletal muscle, and molecular medicine. Zulinski Named Eta Kappa Nu Professor of the Year
Professor Robert Zulinski has received the 1999 Eta Kappa Nu Professor of the Year award. This is the second consecutive year that Professor Zulinski has received this honor, and his fifth overall. Selected by a vote of the Department's students, the Professor of the Year award provides students a chance to recognize the professor who has most influenced, motivated, or inspired them during the previous year. "The first thing that comes to mind when you mention Dr. Zulinski," said Eta Kappa Nu President Derek Johnson, "is the fact that he has a good sense of humor. He has a way of keeping students interested in the topic at hand." (more)
