Dr. John Auzins holds
a 1959 vintage B.S.E.E. from Michigan Tech and 1963 M.S./Ph.D.
in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.
In 1959, John started
his career with Lear Siegler in Grand Rapids and in 1960 he was
with PR Mallory Co. in Indianapolis. Since graduation, he has
nearly 34 years of automotive electronics experience with Delco
Electronics (DE). He led the establishment of monolithic integrated
circuits at DE in the early 1960s and the development and implementation
of hybrid modules for automobiles including regulators, ignitions,
manifold pressure sensors and direct ignition modules in the 1970s
and early 1980s. In the late 1980s, Dr. Auzins led radio and audio
systems developments including the first application of steering
wheel controls. His last seven years at DE were spent in Advanced
Development/Systems Integration as Staff Research Engineer, where
he was responsible for annual research selection, rating and multi-million
dollar funding of GMR, HRL and other laboratories and universities.
He personally worked on research for ion sense for engine controls
and published a highly requested SAE paper on the subject. He
also acted as an internal consultant by advising management and
serving on the Delphi Advanced Development Director Council. Dr.
Auzins holds patents for integrated circuit ignitions and air
bag electronics. Since his retirement from General Motors, he
has been doing automotive electronics consulting through his company,
JXA, LLC.
John has maintained
a significant relationship with academia over the years, consulting
with The Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research
(CAR) as their part-time Industrial Director, teaching courses
at Purdue University and at Indiana University in Kokomo, and
serving on two academic advisory boards: Purdue University’s
Electrical Engineering Industrial Institute and Michigan Tech’s
External Advisory Committee (EAC) for Electrical Engineering.
John was a charter member of both Purdue’s Institute and
Michigan Tech’s EAC, serving on Tech’s committee with
distinction into the late 1990's.
