Howard Zollinger is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He recieved his B.S.E.E. from Michigan Tech in 1951, and joined
Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh as an engineer
in the Industry Engineering Department. While working he attended
night school at the University of Pittsburgh and received his
M.S.E.E. in 1958 and a Business Management Certificate in 1961.
Mr.
Zollinger started his career in bulk material handling and overhead
cranes. He simplified the application of electrical equipment
and went on to lead Westinghouse into the prime contracting of
automated material handling systems, developing techniques which
were later sold to European clients, while continuing to advance
the broad field of material handling and control in North America.
Subsequently,
Mr. Zollinger started, grew and managed the Computer and Controls
division of Rapistan Incorporated in Grand Rapids, MI the nation’s
leading Conveyor Equipment and Systems Company. While in this
position, his division developed innovative electric devices such
as Programmable Sort Controllers, Distribution Accountability
Systems, Order Pick Directors, and Operatorless Fork Truck Systems
for Mid-Rise Storage. This work led to his being asked to join
the Mannesmann Demag Corporation, the largest materials handling
company in the world. He was hired as a Vice President of DEMAG
to develop, grow and manage a new Integrated Systems activity
in North America.
Since 1990,
Mr. Zollinger has used his personal experience to consult and
plan systems for North American and European clients. As President
of Zollinger Associates, Inc., he likewise connects clients with
his associates for specific needs.
While at Michigan
Tech, Howard served on the Student Council, the Athletic Board,
and Treasurer of Blue Key and was recognized in Who’s Who
in America. Ten Years out of school Howard won the Eta Kappa Nu
Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer Award. Howard has served
two six-year terms on the Alumni Board. He and his wife have established
the Howard and Wilma Zollinger Endowed Basketball Fund.
