ACTIVE CHAPTER BYLAWS

Michigan Tech Beta Gamma Chapter

Adopted by the Beta Gamma Chapter, February 14, 1948

Article I

The name of this organization shall be Beta Gamma Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu Association.

Article II

This organization shall be located at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan.

Article III (Object)

The objects of this organization shall be:

SECTION 1 -- To uphold the purposes and statutes of Eta Kappa Nu Association as set forth in the Constitution and Ritual of that association.

SECTION 2 -- To promote and encourage a higher scholastic standing and desire for greater knowledge in the studies prescribed in the Electrical Engineering Curriculum of Michigan Technological University.

SECTION 3 -- To cooperate with and support the activities of the local student branches of the Electrical Engineering Professional Societies.

SECTION 4 -- To cooperate with the other honor societies on campus.

Article IV (Membership)

SECTION 1 -- The eligibility requirements for candidates shall be defined in the Constitution of the Eta Kappa Nu Association.

SECTION 2 -- Names for membership in this organization may be proposed by the membership committee or by recommendation of any one of the members in good standing.

SECTION 3 -- No undergraduate shall be eligible for consideration for election to membership who has not been in regular attendance at Michigan Technological University for at least two terms prior to the time of his consideration.

SECTION 4 -- A smoker will be held to acquaint the entire membership with all the prospective candidates. Each student eligible for election to membership shall be notified by letter and urged to attend this smoker. Failure to attend this soci al affair, for any reason, shall not prejudice the candidate's opportunity for election, although he or she will be required to appear before the membership for an interview if he or she was not in attendance at the smoker.

SECTION 5 -- It shall be the duty of the president of the chapter to submit to the active membership a list of eligible prospective members as early in the first and third terms of the school year as possible.

SECTION 6 -- Candidates shall be elected on the basis of the following three considerations:

a. Scholastic average as heretofore and hereinafter provided.

b. Extra-curricular activities and/or outside work.

c. Personality and character, without regard to race, sex, physical handicap, religion, or political belief.

SECTION 7 -- A meeting will be held for the express purpose of electing new members. At this election meeting, the candidates shall be discussed and voted on in alphabetical order. After discussion of each candidate a secret ballot is taken a nd tallied. Candidates receiving unanimous approval on the first ballot are elected provided the election is by at least three-quarters of the active membership. After the complete list of candidates has been discussed and a first vote taken, the list o f eligibles who received four or more votes against them may be eliminated. The chairman of the meeting in asking for comments, shall give opportunity to those who voted negatively to express their reason if they wish. if the reasons are personal the ch airman may suggest that the member refrain from voting. A second ballot may be taken in the like manner. Those who failed to be elected at any one election are not disqualified from being considered in proper order at subsequent elections.

SECTION 8 -- Candidates elected to membership should be pledged as soon after election as possible.

SECTION 9 -- Candidates elected to membership shall be informed by letter of their election to pledgeship as soon after election as possible. They shall be given not more than one week to signify in writing their acceptance.

SECTION 10 -- Pledges shall be assigned definite duties to be performed and completed in a specific time. These duties shall not require an undue amount of the pledge's time nor undermine the dignity of the organization.

SECTION 11 -- The initiation of pledges shall consist of two parts -- an informal and a formal. the time for each part is to be determined at a regular meeting.

SECTION 12 -- Immediately after the informal initiation, but before the formal initiation, a final vote will be taken on the acceptability for membership of each candidate. A simple majority of members voting is sufficient to insure acceptance .

Article V

SECTION 1 -- The offices of the chapter, their term of office and duties shall be stated in the national Constitution.

SECTION 2 -- Any vacancy in the offices of the chapter shall be filled at the first regular meeting after the vacancy occurs.

SECTION 3 -- Election of all officers shall be held at a regular meeting in the spring term before May 1.

SECTION 4 -- The officers shall be elected by ballot, a majority of the ballots cast being necessary for election.

SECTION 5 -- The terms of all officers, except those governed by the constitution, shall be for one (1) year beginning at the next regular meeting, following their election.

SECTION 6 -- The advisory board shall consist of the acting officers and of the Electrical Engineering Department faculty advisor, who is also a member of this fraternity. The president of the chapter shall be the chairman of the board.

Article VI

SECTION 1 -- The President of the chapter shall appoint such committees as he deems necessary.

Article VII

SECTION 1 -- Regular meetings shall be called twice a month during the regular school year.

SECTION 2 -- The President may call special meetings at such times as he may deem expedient or shall be required to do so upon the request of five members in good standing.

SECTION 3 -- Three-fourths of the active membership shall constitute a quorum for election meetings. A two-thirds majority of the active membership shall constitute a quorum for other meetings.

Article VIII

SECTION 1 -- No dues shall be collected from the members as long as there is a treasury balance of one hundred dollars ($100) or over. In case the balance falls below this limit, a minimum of one dollar ($1) shall be imposed on each member for each school term as long as the balance is deficient of the limit named above. The exact amount of this assessment shall be determined by the members at a regularly-scheduled meeting. This assessment shall be due at the beginning of each term.

SECTION 2 -- The initiation fees shall be determined as follows:

(1) National Membership Assessment including Bridge Subscription

(2) Local Initiation Assessment of $13

SECTION 3 -- Special assessments may be levied by the vote of a two-thirds majority of the chapter members.

Article IX

SECTION 1 -- These By-Laws may be amended at any regular meeting of the chapter by a vote of three-fourths of the active members; but such amendments to be effective must be approved by the National Executive Council of Eta Kappa Nu Association.
