Graduate Research Assitantships (GRAs) in EE Power at Michigan
Tech:
Dr. Mork.
Full GRA (20 hrs/wk) starting December 1, 1997. Books, tuition,
fees, travel to conferences, etc, is paid for. Summer job at
$2240/month (compare to GRA at about $860/month). Work with Labhesh
Ganatra (MSEE from MTU in 1992) and Kalyan Mustaphi, Northern States
Power. Access to and use of state-of-the-art computers, software, and
lab equipment. Continually-updated 200-MHz WinNT machine in your
office, 200-MHz Win95 in Lab, etc.
The project involves gradually becoming familiar with such things
as the EMTP program, building system models for transient studies,
benchmarking models, running transient studies, working with uProc
DSP protective relays, relay testing, improving modeling of system
components and relays, Power Line Carrier Communications (PLC), etc.
These activities will complement our EE582 and EE590C courses. Also,
you can decide which of the many topics above to focus on for your
thesis project
MTU Research Excellence Fund - Lab Infrastructure Development
Project:
This project started in December 1996. The first year of funding
provided the relay testing equipment in SB19. One year of funding for
a PhD student is presently available. Additional funding for more
equipment and MS student support has been applied for but results will
not be known for some time. Activities may include interfacing all
simulation software and lab equipment together using LabView, learning
how to use new equipment and software, developing new computer modeling
approaches for transient simulation, etc. Contact Drs. Mork or
Bohmann.
Graduate Teaching Assitantships (GTAs) at Michigan Tech:
A limited number of GTAs are available, some of them for teaching power
or energy conversion laboratories. Students work for 10 hr/wk or 20 hr/wk
and in exchange get their tuition paid and receive a stipend. Good
English speaking skills are required. See Dr. Wiitanen.
